Asthma severity in men and women is modified by hormonal changes across the lifespan. Greater lifetime exposure to endogenous and exogenous oestrogen is associated with more severe asthma.
We propose that individuals with asthma might be at a lower risk of COVID-19 incidence and severity overall.
However, women with asthma have a combination of phenotypic heterogeneities, including a Th1 immunological skewness, a predisposition towards more severe asthma, structural lung parenchymal differences, and hormonal differences, which might increase their susceptibility to severe COVID-19 requiring hospitalisation.

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2770975?utm_source=silverchair&utm_campaign=altmetric&utm_content=2020_year-end&cmp=1&utm_medium=email
These data provide evidence of changes in alcohol use and associated consequences during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to a range of negative physical health associations, excessive alcohol use may lead to or worsen existing mental health problems, such as anxiety or depression,6 which may themselves be increasing during COVID-19. The population level changes for women, younger, and non-Hispanic White individuals highlight that health systems may need to educate consumers through print or online media about increased alcohol use during the pandemic and identify factors associated with susceptibility and resilience to the impacts of COVID-19.

The three periods are
· Gestation (conception to birth), which is characterized by extensive production, migration, and differentiation of neurons, as well as substantial apoptosis;
· Later adolescence (age 15 to 19 years), a period marked by synaptic pruning and increased axonal myelination; and
· Older adulthood (age 65 and beyond), a period associated with brain atrophy. Changes accelerate after age 65, largely driven by decreases in neuron size and reductions in the number of dendritic spines and synapses.

Reported prevalence of serious psychological distress among US adults was 13.6% in April 2020 and 13% in July 2020. Persistent distress increases risk of psychiatric disorders, which the Kessler 6 scale predicts.3 High prevalence at both time points suggests that the pandemic’s longer-term disruptions are important drivers of distress.

Jednak mocna czarna kawa wypita przed śniadaniem (słodzony napój) zwiększyła odpowiedź organizmu na cukier aż o 50 proc. To niedobrze – podkreślają badacze.

Najniższy poziom obaw charakteryzuje najmłodszych respondentów, do 34. roku życia (44 proc). W kolejnej grupie wiekowej (35-44 lata) liczba deklarujących lęk przed zakażeniem przekracza już połowę wskazań (57 proc.) i potem z każdą kolejną, starszą o dekadę, grupą wiekową rośnie. Najbardziej boją się osoby powyżej 65. roku życia (78 proc.), u których przebieg choroby bywa najcięższy.

Such research has primarily used cognitive-type strategies, and promising findings have been observed, including a reduction of depression onset in adults and among younger children and adolescents.2 Most research has been in secondary and indicated prevention of at-risk groups rather than primary prevention. The major challenges with such strategies are that they are dependent on resources, delivery, and other implementation factors.
The workplace has also been identified as an important setting for interventions targeting adults. This is supported by evidence demonstrating depression and anxiety as a major cause of work absence due to sickness and subsequent long-term disability.4
The onset of depression is most common during adolescence and early adulthood; hence, early life is the critical window for prevention.

COVID-19 has also triggered enormous displays of pro-social behaviour with neighbours coming to the aid of those isolated by the containment efforts and of support for front-line workers, including doctors, nurses, and other health-care personnel, whose responsibilities keep them at risk of infection. In the public conversation about this pandemic, an admirable empathy has been evident for those who have been affected and for those who have died from COVID-19.
It turns out that COVID-19 does discriminate, and that those who are already vulnerable—for example, the unstably housed, people on low income, those with poorer education, and individuals with less access to reliable nutritious food—are more likely to both become infected with the virus and die from COVID-19.

Optimism about viral control in LMICs is misplaced and deleterious. Several factors may explain the current picture: younger populations (eg, a median age in Africa of 19 years, vs 31 years globally) lead to lower severity and lethality4; less travel, warmer weather, greater humidity, and/or more direct sunlight may affect virus dissemination; and other pervasive infections may provide a different immunologic profile.

Science has revealed that human brains are triggered by things that are bright and shiny. Why it's usually not effective

Badanie ankietowe wśród 171 studentów przeprowadził zespół psychologów pod kierownictwem prof. Dariusza Dolińskiego i prof. Wojciecha Kuleszy z Uniwersytetu SWPS.

“Herd Immunity” Redefined
The striking racial/ethnic disparities reported for COVID-19 infection, testing, and disease burden are a clear reminder that failure to protect the most vulnerable members of society not only harms them but also increases the risk of spread of the virus, with devastating health and economic consequences for all. COVID-19 disparities are not the fault of those who are experiencing them, but rather reflect social policies and systems that create health disparities in good times and inflate them in a crisis.
The US must develop a new kind of “herd immunity,” whereby resistance to the spread of poor health in the population occurs when a sufficiently high proportion of individuals, across all racial, ethnic, and social class groups, are protected from and thus “immune” to negative social determinants.

https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/united-states/2020-04-07/pandemic-will-accelerate-history-rather-reshape-it?fbclid=IwAR1t4g2-uYpp8QtoRm3Q_moJtTPwziThYuGEj3jjVcMt48uc3H7esZNzqHE
We are going through what by every measure is a great crisis, so it is natural to assume that it will prove to be a turning point in modern history. In the months since the appearance of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, analysts have differed over the type of world the pandemic will leave in its wake. But most argue that the world we are entering will be fundamentally different from what existed before. Some predict the pandemic will bring about a new world order led by China; others believe it will trigger the demise of China’s leadership. Some say it will end globalization; others hope it will usher in a new age of global cooperation. And still others project that it will supercharge nationalism, undermine free trade, and lead to regime change in various countries—or all of the above

- The Business of Medicine in the Era of COVID-19

The United States will eventually get through the acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis but not without fundamental changes to the medical care system. Since the epidemic began, payment policy has stretched to remedy the bias of the health care system for in-person treatment provided by physicians. In response to the need for social distancing, new policies include broader payment for telemedicine, expanded scope-of-practice ability for nonphysician practitioners, and increased ability of physicians and nurses to practice across state lines. While these policy reforms address some of the immediate needs of this crisis, such as getting personnel to where they are most needed, they are not a complete solution to the COVID-19 crisis. How the aftermath of the current COVID-19 wave is handled will be just as important for the business of health care as what is happening now.
- Working from home in the time of covid-19: how to best preserve occupational health?
http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/oemed-2020-106599
In response to the covid-19 pandemic, many countries have adopted a broad spectrum of containment measures, from recommendations to stay at home to quarantines of large geographic regions. As part of this response, corporations and governments alike have strongly encouraged workers to telecommute where possible. More than 3.4 billion people in 84 countries have been confined to their homes, as estimated in late March 2020, which potentially translates to many millions of workers temporarily exposed to telecommuting. Since 2000, the emergence of digital and broadband internet has facilitated the development of home telework. Despite limited research interest on its impact on occupational health, several health benefits and risks of telework have been identified in academic or grey literature (table 1) (for a review see Ref. 1).

Euronews <noreply@euronews.com
Tucked away in the Sablon area of Brussels is Le Wine Bar des Marrolles. The restaurant, set in a 17th-century building, serves the finest seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients for classic European dishes. Opened 13 years ago by Vincent Thomaes, it is a true delight and one of my favourite places to eat out in the EU capital.
Like many restaurants across this culinary continent, Le Wine Bar des Marrolles is intimate, bustling and tightly packed. It has atmosphere. But if it is allowed to reopen this summer and strict social distancing rules remain in place, will restaurants like this be able to survive? Will you even want to visit them?
As European countries nervously and slowly start to relax restrictions, everyone seems agreed that places like bars and restaurants will be the last to reopen. And frankly this makes sense. Only a small number of countries – among them Austria, the Czech Republic and Italy – have put a tentative date on when service can resume.
So how might the experience be different? Well, for restaurateurs it will mean fewer tables. Some estimates (by UK Hospitality) suggest that will mean cutting the capacity of fine dining restaurants by an average of 55 percent. And in more casual restaurants, where tables are often closer together, by 70 percent. Many of those same restaurants might decide that it makes no economic sense to stay open; that with so few customers, they would actually be losing more money.
The experience of going out to eat could be wholly different to what we're used to. No more strolling through city centres seeing

- Amsterdam, pandemia i ekorozwój
https://antymatrix.blog.polityka.pl/2020/04/09/amsterdam-pandemia-i-ekorozwoj/
Gdy nadszedł kryzys, miasto było gotowe, by zareagować ucieczką do przodu. Podobnie działo się przed ponad 400 laty, kiedy ówczesny Globalny Kryzys związany m.in. z małą epoką lodową doprowadził do załamania gospodarki, wojen i masowego wyludnienia.
Wiele społeczeństw kryzys zmarnowało, m.in.

- Contact tracing: Public health management of persons, including healthcare workers, having had contact with COVID-19 cases in the European Union - second update
https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/covid-19-contact-tracing-public-health-management-second-update
This document outlines the key steps of contact tracing, including contact identification, listing and follow-up, in the context of the COVID-19 response.Contact management is based on the latest available evidence, as outlined below.
•Current estimates suggest a median incubation period from five to six days, with a range from 1 to 14 days. A recent modelling study confirmed that it remains prudent to consider an incubation period of up to 14 days [1,2].
•A case may already be infectious up to 48 hours before the onset of symptoms. A recent study reported that 12.6% of case reports indicated presymptomatic transmission [3]. In addition, the proportion of presymptomatic transmission has been inferred through modelling and was estimated to be – in the presence of control measures – at around 48% and 62% in Singapore and China (Tianjin data), respectively [4]. Other studies have shown no significant difference in viral load in asymptomatic and symptomatic patients, indicating the potential of virus transmission from asymptomatic patients [5-7].
•Transmission is believed to be mainly via respiratory droplets and direct contact with infected people and indirect contact with surfaces or objects in the immediate environment [8]. Recent experimental studies carried out under highly controlled conditions have demonstrated the survival of SARS-CoV-2 on different surfaces and in aerosol. Different levels of environmental contamination have been described in rooms of COVID-19 patients [9-11].
•Up to 10% of reported cases in China [12] and up to 9% of cases in Italy were among healthcare workers [13]. It is likely that nosocomial outbreaks play an important role in amplifying local outbreaks, and they disproportionately affect the elderly and vulnerable population

What does it mean to be vulnerable? Vulnerable groups of people are those that are disproportionally exposed to risk, but who is included in these groups can change dynamically. A person not considered vulnerable at the outset of a pandemic can become vulnerable depending on the policy response. The risks of sudden loss of income or access to social support have consequences that are difficult to estimate and constitute a challenge in identifying all those who might become vulnerable

The desire to be physically near others is human nature. We humans -- or our ancestor species, more precisely -- have been social creatures since the Stone Age. Many studies have shown that hunter-gatherers formed "bands" as they found it more efficient to find enough food for survival through joint efforts. They also found strength in numbers, fending off threats, whether animal or human, more effectively as a group.

A new paper addresses this question and, although the conclusions are based on early data, the findings indicate the presence of pre-symptomatic transmission in more than 10% of cases.
